Historian Lilia Antipow examines how regional clothing was recast as a visible statement of ‘folk’ and nation between 1918 and 1945. Examples from the Wischauer language island, Danube Swabian communities and East Prussia show inherited dress being adapted, standardised or newly invented for political ends. The free talk accompanies HDO’s exhibition on the politicisation of German folk culture in Eastern Europe.
